Before the days of GPS or detailed maps, folks relied on a simple compass and their wits in order to travel through the frontier. This was a dangerous time to live in. Native American tribes didn’t appreciate trespassers, and many predatory animals posed a serious threat as well. That’s why the brave explorer in this image has his firearm ready if he needs it. He seems to be perched on a cliff overlooking his surroundings, perhaps trying to get a better idea of the journey ahead. It will be a long, and treacherous route, but fortune favors the bold.
