Buffalo Peace Pipe

The peace pipe or “Calumet” has become one of the most famous parts of native American culture. Even those who are unfamiliar with that culture can still identify a peace pipe thanks to Hollywood and pop culture references. Many people are unaware of the nature and intention of this item though. The peace pipe was used to smoke tobacco by most of the Eastern tribes, but out West, most of the tribes smoked “kinnikinnick” which was a combination of tobacco, plants, and barks. The primary purpose of using the peace pipe was for ceremonial events, but it could be used for personal reasons as well. The buffalo in the background further connects the importance of the native American culture due to the fact that the buffalo was one of many animals that provided the native Americans with many things they needed to survive.
