The Valkyries are arguably the most notable female creatures in Norse mythology. They are often depicted as beautiful, angelic, female warriors riding horses in the sky above a battlefield. Some accounts claim that they would unleash a blood curdling shriek, swoop down to the battlefield, and choose fallen warriors to take with them to Valhalla. What’s Valhalla? Well, it’s described as a massive hall that’s ruled over by Odin, the main god in Norse mythology and the father of Thor. The Vikings believed that only the brave souls who perished in battle would be taken by the Valkyries into Valhalla where they would accompany Odin until Ragnarök, or the final battle between good and evil. If you died of illness or natural causes, then you weren’t allowed this luxury.
