Flight Engineer Wings

The United States Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) awards Flight Engineer (FE) wings to graduates of an approved FE training program. The certificate is evidence of the holder’s qualification to serve as a flight engineer on turbojet-powered aircraft. An FE can act as second in command on an aircraft, and may be responsible for operating and monitoring the aircraft’s engines, navigation, and other systems during flight. In some cases, the FE may also be responsible for troubleshooting problems with the aircraft’s systems. To be eligible for an FE certificate, a person must hold a commercial pilot certificate or higher, and must have completed an approved FE training program. The training program must include both ground school and flight training components. Once a person has completed an FE training program, they must pass a written exam and a practical test in order to be issued an FE certificate. The written exam covers topics such as aircraft systems, turbine engine operation, and flight planning. The practical test consists of an oral examination and a flight test, during which the applicant must demonstrate their ability to operate the aircraft’s systems and perform various tasks such as engine start-up, shutdown, and emergency procedures. Once a person holds an FE certificate, they are qualified to serve as second in command on turbojet-powered aircraft. In some cases, an FE may also be authorized to act as pilot in command of certain types of turbojet-powered aircraft. The US Navy is one of the few military organizations that still use flight engineers. Navy flight engineers are responsible for monitoring and operating the aircraft’s systems during flight, as well as performing various other duties such as calculating fuel consumption and managing the aircraft’s weight and balance. Navy flight engineers are typically assigned to fixed-wing aircraft such as the F/A-18 Hornet or the E-2 Hawkeye. They may also serve on rotary-wing aircraft such as the MH-60 Seahawk or the CH-53 Sea Stallion. Navy flight engineers are typically assigned to a specific aircraft type and remain with that aircraft throughout their career. They receive extensive training on the systems of their assigned aircraft. Navy flight engineers are an important part of the aircraft’s crew and play a vital role in ensuring the safe operation of the aircraft.
